Quick answer
Atmospheric river gutter prep in Tacoma and the South Sound, WA: An atmospheric river is a long plume of Pacific moisture that can stall over the South Sound and rain for days. The December 8 to 12, 2025 event ran about 96 hours in places and rated AR 4 on the Washington coast on CW3E’s 1 to 5 scale. Before the next one, get the troughs cleared by hand, flush and test every downspout, make sure each outlet carries water away from the foundation, and fix sagging runs and leaking seams. Watch CW3E’s free AR Scale forecast for a few days’ warning. Call (253) 777-1572 or book online.

December 2025
Four days, two pulses and a lot of water with nowhere to go
The last big river is the best guide to the next one. Here is what it did, close to home.
The first pulse of the December 2025 atmospheric river made landfall over Washington and Oregon early on December 8. A second pulse moved onshore late on December 9 and kept atmospheric river conditions over Washington through December 11. Scientists at the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) at UC San Diego rated it AR 4 over coastal Washington, and they called out its long duration: about 96 hours in some locations.
It was not a distant storm for us. CW3E’s own team set up at McMillin Reservoir near Tacoma and launched 32 weather balloons over 96 hours to measure it. Their forecast model showed two peaks of moisture flow over a point in Pierce County, late on December 8 and early on December 10. New daily rainfall records were set at Olympia Airport on December 9 and at Sea-Tac on December 10.

What it did around our service area
The flooding was mostly a river story, and some of it landed right next door. CW3E’s summary, citing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, shows a flood wall failure on the White River in Pacific, between Auburn and Sumner. Upstream of Auburn on the Green River, the reservoir behind Howard A. Hanson Dam reached a record elevation on December 12. The Cedar River at Renton crested at a record 18.22 feet, and the governor’s office reported more than 250 emergency rescues across the state.
Most South Sound homes were never near a river. What they dealt with was four days of rain on ground that was already full. That is the part your gutters control: whether the water coming off your roof goes somewhere useful, or lands at your foundation, in your crawlspace, or on a slope that was already soaked.
How much water your roof sheds in a storm like that
Every inch of rain on a square foot of roof is about 0.623 gallons of water. A 2,000 square foot roof under the 3.44 inches Sea-Tac logged from December 8 to 11 shed roughly 4,290 gallons in four days (2,000 x 3.44 x 0.623). All of it went through the gutters and downspouts, or over the edge.
| Weak spot | What you see in a long storm | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Needle mat in the trough | Water sheeting over the front edge along the whole run | Hand cleaning, then BroGuard fine mesh |
| Plugged outlet or elbow | Overflow at one corner while the downspout stays dry | Clearing the drop and flush-testing the downspout |
| Leaking seam or end cap | A drip line behind the gutter and stains on the fascia | Gutter repair or a seamless run |
| Sagging run | A strip of standing water, overflow at the low point | Rehanging and re-pitching the run |
| Buried line running full | Gurgling, then water spilling out at the top elbow | Testing and clearing the line, or underground drainage work |
| Short or missing extension | Puddles at the foundation, a damp crawlspace on that side | Extensions or a buried line that carries water away |

Read the forecast, then work the 48-hour list
Two steps. Check what category the next atmospheric river is forecast to be, then tick off what you can do from the ground before it lands.
Check the AR Scale forecast
The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) at UC San Diego publishes a free 7-day AR Scale forecast for the West Coast. Open it, find the latitude closest to Tacoma, and note the category it shows.
- Open CW3E’s AR Scale forecast (opens in a new tab)
- Sign up for CW3E’s AR Scale text or email alerts (opens in a new tab)
- National Weather Service Seattle forecast (opens in a new tab)
Pick a category above. CW3E ranks every atmospheric river from 1 (weak) to 5 (exceptional), based on how much water vapor it carries and how long it sits over one place.
Work the 48-hour checklist

Book before the next storm. We clean the troughs by hand, flush and test every downspout, and fix the sags and leaks you found, with a free written estimate first.
How this works / Sources
The categories. The names and impact wording for AR 1 to AR 5 are CW3E’s, from their release introducing the AR Scale (Ralph et al. 2019). CW3E ranks an AR by its strongest moisture flow and by how long AR conditions (integrated vapor transport above 250 kg per meter per second) last at one spot. Per CW3E, an AR lasting less than 24 hours drops one category and one lasting more than 48 hours moves up one.
What it means for a gutter. That line under each category is our crew’s read of what we see on South Sound rooflines at that strength. It is not part of CW3E’s scale.
Your checklist. Ticks live only in this page’s memory. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Our rain season
Why the South Sound needs a plan before November
Atmospheric rivers do not arrive on dry ground. They land in the middle of the wettest stretch of the year.
Sea-Tac averages 39.3 inches of rain a year, and about three quarters of it falls between October and March. November is the wettest month on the books, with about 6.3 inches on average, and December and January are close behind. July averages about six tenths of an inch. By the time a big river shows up in December, the soil has had two months to fill, and roof water that would soak in during September runs across the surface instead.
That timing is why the work has to happen early. The fall cleaning should be done before the heavy rain settles in, so the system starts the wet season clear. Search interest in gutter cleaning around Seattle and Tacoma peaks in November, the same month the rain does.

What we look at on a pre-season visit
- Every trough cleared by hand, with needles, maple seed and moss bagged and hauled off.
- Every downspout flushed and tested, so we know water is leaving the system.
- Seams, end caps and outlets checked for drips behind the gutter.
- Hangers and pitch checked on every run, especially the long ones.
- Where each downspout lets out, and whether that water ends up at the foundation.
- Whether each downspout is carrying more roof than it can handle in a long storm.
That last check matters more here than people expect. If one downspout is draining a big section of roof, it can be the weak link even when everything is clean. Our post on 5-inch vs 6-inch gutters for Tacoma rain walks through how we look at it.
Before, during and after
A simple storm plan for your gutters
Most of the work happens weeks ahead. The rest is watching and taking notes.
- September or OctoberBook the full cleaning, downspout flush and any repairs before the wet season starts. This is the visit that matters most.
- When a river shows up in the forecastCheck the category on CW3E’s AR Scale page and work the 48-hour checklist above from the ground.
- The day beforeMake sure every extension is attached, every outlet is clear and nothing is stored where a downspout lets out.
- During the stormStay off the ladder. Watch from a window and note where water comes over the edge or pools by the house. A photo on your phone is perfect.
- The first dry dayLook for runs that sag, seams that drip, and soft or washed-out ground under the downspouts.
- Call with your notesSend us what you saw. Those photos tell our crew exactly where to start, and the estimate is free.
After a windstorm: a quick gutter check
Our wet season brings wind along with the rain, and big gusts drop fir limbs, cedar fronds and maple branches right onto the roofline. Once the wind settles and it is safe to be outside, walk around the house from the ground and look for these:
- Branches or fir limbs lying in the gutter or across the roof edge, damming the trough
- A run pulled away from the fascia, a gap behind the gutter or a section that now dips
- Hangers bent or pulled loose, so the gutter sags between brackets
- Downspouts knocked loose at the elbows or separated from the gutter outlet
- Dents or a cracked seam where a falling branch hit
- Water spilling over the front of the gutter in the next rain instead of running down the downspout
Skip the ladder after a storm. Take photos from the ground and call us at (253) 777-1572. A pulled run, a sagging section or a loose downspout is a gutter repair our crew can look at, and the estimate is free.
Keeping it clear between storms
Under Douglas fir and western red cedar, a trough can refill in a single winter. If you are cleaning more than twice a year, BroGuard fine metal mesh keeps needles out while the rain goes through, and our gutter maintenance program puts you on a schedule timed to the wet season. Our fir needle and moss calendar shows what lands in your gutters each month, depending on the trees over your roof.
Past the downspout
When the gutter is clean and the water is still a problem
In a long storm, where the water goes after it leaves the downspout matters as much as the gutter itself.
A clean gutter that dumps 4,000 gallons at one corner of the house has only moved the problem. In the South Sound that usually shows up three ways: a buried line that backs up and spills at the top elbow, a damp crawlspace on the side of the house under the busiest downspout, or soggy, washed-out ground on a slope below the house.
The first two are about the line under your yard, and our guide to downspout drainage in Tacoma explains how to hose-test one. The third is the one to take seriously. If your house sits near a bluff, a ravine or a steep bank, read how Tacoma homes on slopes should drain their gutters before the next river arrives.
Where we can help, and where we hand off
Everything from the roof edge to the point where water leaves your downspout is ours: troughs, outlets, downspouts, extensions and underground gutter drainage lines. If we see signs that the ground itself is moving, like new cracks in the soil or a slope that has slumped, we will tell you plainly that it is a job for a geotechnical engineer first. We serve homes across Tacoma, Puyallup, University Place, Federal Way, Auburn and the rest of the South Sound, and our moss and needle season guide covers the whole wet season.

An atmospheric river is a long, narrow plume of moist air carried across the Pacific that drops heavy rain when it reaches land. When one stalls over western Washington, it can rain hard for days. The December 2025 river carried very moist air from the subtropical North Pacific and kept atmospheric river conditions over Washington from December 8 to 11, according to CW3E.
CW3E’s AR Scale ranks atmospheric rivers by how much water vapor they carry and how long they last over one place. AR 1 (weak) is “primarily beneficial,” AR 3 (strong) is a “balance of beneficial and hazardous,” and AR 5 (exceptional) is “primarily hazardous.” A river lasting more than 48 hours moves up a category, and one lasting less than 24 hours moves down.
CW3E rated it AR 4 on the Washington coast and AR 3 over the western Cascade foothills, with about 96 hours of atmospheric river conditions in some places. Sea-Tac set a daily rainfall record on December 10, Olympia on December 9, a flood wall failed on the White River in Pacific, and the governor reported more than 250 emergency rescues.
CW3E’s free AR Scale forecast looks seven days ahead for the West Coast, and you can sign up for its text or email alerts. The National Weather Service office in Seattle covers the local forecast. A week of warning is enough for the ground-level checklist, but not always enough to get on a busy crew’s schedule, so book the cleaning before the season starts.
No. Wet rungs, wind and soaked ground make a ladder dangerous, and pulling a few handfuls out of an overflowing gutter will not fix it. Watch from inside, take photos of where water comes over the edge or pools by the house, and book a proper clean-out and downspout flush for the first dry stretch.
A clean, well-pitched system with working downspouts and outlets that carry water away handles most of what reaches the South Sound. The trouble spots are packed troughs, sagging runs, leaking seams, and a single downspout draining too much roof. On a pre-season visit we check every one of those and tell you which ones matter on your house.
Fine metal mesh like BroGuard keeps fir and cedar needles out of the trough, so the gutter is still clear when a long storm arrives instead of filling up over the winter. You still want downspouts flushed and outlets checked before the season, but a guarded gutter does not refill between cleanings the way an open one does under South Sound trees.
