Gutter sizing in the South Sound

Sizing gutters for a roof that sees rain for months, not minutes

We size gutters run by run, not house by house. Here’s how we work it out, and which page to read next.

In the South Sound the test is rarely one violent cloudburst. It’s 37 to 40 inches of rain spread across months, plus the atmospheric rivers that stall over us between Nov and Mar and keep a roof shedding water for days. A gutter that keeps up with an ordinary shower can still fall behind when one section has been collecting all afternoon, or when an inside valley pours two roof planes into a few feet of trough.

So we size each section by what drains into it: the roof area above, the pitch, any upper roof that empties onto it, valleys, and the roofing material. On most houses that means 5 inch nearly everywhere, with 6 inch on the one or two runs that take the most water. Seven inch is mostly for commercial buildings, barns and very large roofs.

Every size is formed seamless on-site from the same truck, so mixing sizes on one house doesn’t leave you with mismatched profiles or colors.

Is it a size problem or a clog?

Overflow looks the same from the yard either way, and bigger gutters won’t fix a plugged outlet. Before anyone quotes you an upgrade, figure out which one you have.

How we size your gutters on the estimate

  1. Walk the whole roofline.Every run, valley and upper roof that drains onto a lower one gets noted.
  2. Measure runs and roof area.We take the length of each run, the roof surface feeding it and the pitch.
  3. Look at the roofing.Metal sheds water fast, and tile or concrete can call for a wider gutter.
  4. Plan the outlets.Downspout count and placement often solve more than gutter width does.
  5. Check where the water lands. We look at the ground below each downspout before deciding where it goes.
  6. Put it in writing.Your free written estimate shows the size and downspouts we recommend and why.

Gutter Sizes Questions, Answered

How do I know what size gutters my house needs?

Gutter size depends on your roofline, the roof’s surface area and pitch, and how much rain it has to carry. A Solutionist measures the roof during a free estimate and sizes each section, instead of defaulting to one size for the whole house.

What gutter sizes do you install in Tacoma?

Three: 5, 6 and 7 inch, all formed seamless on-site. Most South Sound houses are fine with 5 inch. When a big or steep roof sends a lot of water into one run, 6 inch carries roughly 40 percent more, and 7 inch is reserved for commercial buildings and very large roof areas. We size each section to the rain it actually has to carry.

Does Tacoma’s rainfall mean I need bigger gutters?

It can. The South Sound gets 37 to 40 inches of rain a year, and it tends to fall steadily for months. If you see heavy rain overshooting your gutters or spilling over the edge, a wider gutter may be the best fix for that part of your home.

Should every gutter on my house be the same size?

Not always. Using two different sizes in the same system is a cost-effective way to add capacity only where your roofline needs it, like a long run or a valley that overflows. The profiles match, so it still looks like one system.

What is an oversized gutter?

Oversized gutters are 6, 7 or even 8 inch gutters. They are sometimes needed on a whole home and sometimes on just one part of the roofline that gets more water than the rest. Contact your local Solutionist about sizes above 7 inch.

Can larger gutters still match my home’s colors?

Yes. Every size comes in a wide range of colors, and we can often match colors outside our regular swatches. Many homeowners match the gutters to the trim and the downspouts to the siding. Moving up to a 6 inch or 7 inch gutter does not limit your color choices.
