Gutters for homes along the Narrows

Titlow sits at the southwest edge of Tacoma where Sixth Avenue meets the water, just south of the Narrows Bridge. Aaron Titlow bought the waterfront in 1903 and opened the Hotel Hesperides there in 1911, the building now known as Titlow Lodge. From 1928 to 1950 a ferry ran from the beach to Fox Island and Point Fosdick, and the land around the old hotel is now Titlow Park, about 75 acres of forest, lagoon and beach. The streets above the park filled in with homes from the 1940s on, many on sloped lots that look out at the water.

Those slopes and trees are where the gutter work comes from. Firs, bigleaf maples, madrones and alders shed into gutters most of the year, and on a hillside lot one clogged outlet sends overflow toward the house below. In the census tract around Titlow, about 60 percent of homes were built before 1980, so plenty of fascia boards here are decades old. With about 42 inches of rain a year at Tacoma Narrows Airport, the nearest NOAA station, we replace soft fascia board first, then hang one-piece runs with outlets sized for the roof above them.

Jamie and Zeke Edwards own The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Tacoma together as husband and wife, and both were raised in the South Sound. Around Titlow our crew hand-cleans gutters, clears downspouts down to the drain line, repairs or replaces worn systems and installs BroGuard micro-mesh where firs and maples hang over the eaves. We also work across the West End, over in University Place and up the hill in Fircrest, and every job starts with a free written estimate.

Titlow Gutter Questions, Answered

Our house near Titlow sits on a slope. What does that change about the gutters?

Mostly where the water ends up. On a sloped lot, an overflowing gutter on the uphill side runs back toward the foundation, and on the downhill side it can wash out beds and soil. We pitch each run toward an outlet that can handle it, extend downspouts past the slope or tie them into a drain line, and check that the water leaves the property the way the city expects.

Are there rules about where downspouts drain in Tacoma?

Yes. Tacoma’s stormwater manual allows downspout dispersion with limits, and it keeps splash blocks and dispersion trenches back from slopes of 15 percent or more. Near the Narrows bluffs that matters, because wet soil on steep ground is a landslide risk. We set downspouts to drain where the city’s rules allow and tell you when a drain line or a different route makes more sense.

How often should gutters near Titlow Park be cleaned?

Two cleanings a year handles most homes, one after the maples drop in fall and one in late winter or spring. Homes that back onto the park’s woods or sit under tall firs often need a third visit. Tacoma Narrows Airport averages about 42 inches of rain a year, with November the wettest month, so a clogged outlet shows up fast. Our maintenance program books those visits for you.

Is BroGuard worth it under firs and madrones?

Usually, yes. Fir needles slip through coarse screens, and madrones drop bark and leaves through much of the year. BroGuard’s fine stainless mesh keeps that debris on top, where wind and rain move most of it off, while water passes through. If your roof only sees light debris, a cleaning schedule may be enough, and we will tell you so.

Do you also work on the West Slope and in University Place?

Yes. Besides Titlow and Day Island, we work across the West Slope, Tacoma’s West End, University Place and Fircrest. Call (253) 777-1572 or book online and our local crew will set up a free written estimate.
