Normandy Park gutters built for a wooded bluff above the Sound

Normandy Park was platted in the 1920s as a planned community across 1,200 acres between Seattle and Tacoma, with French Normandy architecture written into the building codes, and it kept the trees. The Depression stopped the original build-out, the town filled in through the late 1940s and 1950s, and it incorporated in 1953. What that leaves us with is a small city of steep-pitched 1920s Normandy houses and post-war ramblers sitting under a mature second-growth canopy, on lots that fall away toward the Cove and into the Walker Creek and Miller Creek ravines. Douglas fir and western red cedar drop needles into the trough all year, big-leaf maple buries it every October, and moss takes hold on every shaded north-facing roof. Around 40 inches of rain has to move through all of that, and wind off Puget Sound pushes a good share of it sideways into the fascia.
